Winchester Cathedral

Winchester 'a Magnificent Cathedral'

Enjoy a trip to Winchester Cathedral this winter, the Mother Church of the Diocese of Winchester, which is part of the Church of England. The Cathedral has its origins in the 7th century when a Christian Church was first built on this site. Since then it has played a fundamental part in the life of this ancient City and a significant role in the history of our nation.

To experience as much of the Cathedral as possible will take a little planning. Here are just 5  highlights  to show the wide range of things available to see and do during a visit, although to do them all may take more than one day, here are just five of them to get you started!

1. Take a Tour -We know that visitors experience more if they explore the Cathedral with our expert guides or take an audio tour

 2. Attend a Service -Everyone is welcome to join our daily services and on most days our evening service is sung by the Cathedral Choir or a visiting choir

 3. Visit the Crypt -Step down into the crypt where you’ll find Antony Gormley’s famous sculpture Sound II.

4.Climb The Tower -See the magnificent bell chamber, panoramic views from the top of the tower and      walk through the great nave roof

 5. Jane Austen - Read the ledgerstone at the grave of  Jane Austen, the great English novelist who lived and wrote in Hampshire
